We know it’s important to look at things beyond salary when navigating our professional moves. Despite this, I commonly see candidates opting for the highest salary and not putting enough weight on other factors.
If you’re in the process of assessing your next employer, here are some key things to consider:
Look at the tenures of employees on LinkedIn as well as track records of internal promotions.
Find out how long has the role been advertised for and how many times - A prolonged vacancy warrants questions about underlying reasons.
Ask how long the last person was in the role and why they left.
If the role is newly created, clarify the scope, expectations, and timeframes. Also, research if similar roles exist in other companies to ensure viability.
Align expectations of both parties. Quantify this with numbers and timeframes if possible.
Pose specific questions rather than generic ones. E.g. Instead of “What’s the culture like?” opt for more detail such as “How often does the team get together for out-of-office activities?”
Take into account the demeanor of the interviewer. A happy interviewer often indicates a positive work environment.
Strongly assess how you click with your potential manager. Not a bad move to add an extra meeting to the process and go for a coffee with them.
If a recruiter is conducting the interview, ask if they have placed individuals in the company before, whether those individuals are still with the business, and gather insights on the working environment from their feedback.
